How to raise emotionally intelligent children

by Staff Bona

In a fast-changing world, raising emotionally intelligent children is just as important as supporting their academic success. Emotional intelligence (EQ) refers to the ability to recognise, understand and manage emotions while building healthy relationships with others. Children with strong emotional intelligence are often more resilient, empathetic and confident, helping them navigate challenges both at school and at home.

Encourage open conversations about feelings

One of the most effective ways to develop emotional intelligence in children is to create a safe space for them to express their emotions.

Encourage children to name what they are feeling, whether it’s happiness, frustration, disappointment or excitement.

Regular conversations about emotions help children develop self-awareness and improve their ability to communicate effectively.

Lead by example

Children learn emotional skills by observing the adults around them. Parents and caregivers who model healthy emotional behaviour—such as managing stress calmly, apologising when necessary and showing empathy towards others—provide powerful lessons.

Demonstrating emotional regulation teaches children that all feelings are valid, but how we respond to them matters.

Teach empathy through everyday experiences

Empathy is a key component of emotional intelligence. Encourage children to consider how others may feel in different situations.

Whether discussing a playground disagreement or a storybook character’s actions, these moments help children understand different perspectives and develop compassion.

Build problem-solving skills

Rather than immediately solving problems for your child, guide them through finding solutions. Asking questions such as, “What do you think you could do next?” helps children develop confidence, resilience and emotional regulation skills.

Raising emotionally healthy children for the future

Developing emotional intelligence is an ongoing process that starts at home. By fostering self-awareness, empathy and effective communication, parents can help raise emotionally intelligent children who are better equipped to thrive in a diverse and dynamic world.
