Keep kids entertained without screens: Try these fun activities

With children spending more time on phones, tablets, televisions and gaming devices, finding ways to enjoy quality family time without screens can be a refreshing change.

Screen-free activities do not have to be complicated or expensive. In fact, some of the most memorable childhood experiences can come from simple activities that encourage creativity, movement, and family connection.

Have a family picnic

With the warmer season upon us, it is time to pack some snacks, sandwiches and fruit and head to the garden or park for a picnic. Let your children help prepare the food and choose the picnic spot. You can make it even more fun by bringing along a ball, frisbee or board game.

Play around with crafts

Give your kids paper, crayons, paint, glue and recyclable household materials and let their imaginations take over. They could make greeting cards, paper animals, masks, or decorations for their bedrooms.

The goal isn’t to create something perfect. Allowing children to experiment freely can help encourage creativity and confidence.

Bake something together

Choose a simple recipe and get the whole family involved. Children can help measure ingredients, mix the batter, and decorate the finished treats.

Besides being fun, baking can introduce younger children to basic maths, following instructions and kitchen skills.

Go on a nature walk

Take the family outside for a walk and encourage your kids to observe their surroundings. Look for interesting leaves, flowers, insects, or birds. You can turn the walk into a simple treasure hunt by creating a list of things for children to find.

Plan a family game night

Bring out the board games, cards, puzzles or traditional games. Games such as Uno, Monopoly, or chess can provide hours of entertainment while encouraging children to practise patience, problem-solving and communication.

For younger children, try simple games such as Simon Says, musical statues or hide-and-seek.

Planting a small garden

Gardening is a great way to get children outdoors while teaching them about nature. Allow them to have their own small area to plant flowers, herbs, or vegetables. Children can help water the plants and watch them grow over time, giving them a sense of responsibility.

The best part is that many of these activities require little money and can be adapted to suit different ages.
