Parenting is one of the most rewarding yet challenging responsibilities a person can take on. While every person has their own way of raising their children, there are different parenting styles that parents and caregivers can adopt to build better relationships with their children.

Below is a list of parenting styles with their pros and cons, as shared by the information portal Window to the Womb:

Authoritative parenting

Authoritative parenting is often considered the most balanced approach. Parents who follow this style set clear rules and expectations while remaining warm, supportive, and open to communication.

They explain the reasons behind decisions and encourage children to express their thoughts and feelings.

Advantages

  • Encourages healthy emotional development.
  • Helps children develop strong social skills.
  • Children are often well-behaved and perform well academically.
  • Builds trust and mutual respect between parent and child.

Disadvantages

  • Children may struggle with boundaries and expectations.
  • Lack of discipline can contribute to behavioural challenges.
  • May make it difficult for children to respect authority figures.

Authoritarian parenting

Authoritarian parents focus heavily on discipline and obedience. They set strict rules and expect children to follow them without question.

Advantages

  • Teaches children to follow rules.
  • Encourages respect for authority.
  • Provides a clear structure that can create a sense of security.

Disadvantages

  • May limit emotional expression and independence.
  • Can affect emotional development.
  • May lead to resentment, anxiety, or rebellious behaviour.

Uninvolved parents

Uninvolved parenting is characterised by low levels of both responsiveness and guidance. Parents may be emotionally distant or preoccupied with other responsibilities.

Advantages

  • Requires less time and involvement from parents.

Disadvantages

  • Can negatively affect a child’s emotional well-being.
  • May lead to social and behavioural difficulties.
  • Can impact self-esteem and overall development.

Permissive parenting

Permissive parents are warm and nurturing but place few demands on their children. They often allow children considerable freedom and avoid strict discipline.

Advantages

  • Creates strong emotional bonds between parent and child.
  • Encourages creativity and independence.
  • Allows children to explore their interests freely.

Disadvantages

  • Children may struggle with boundaries and expectations.
  • Lack of discipline can contribute to behavioural challenges.
  • May make it difficult for children to respect authority figures.
