Not every disagreement is toxic. Healthy conflict can lead to growth, understanding and stronger relationships. Toxic behaviour, however, is often repetitive, manipulative and emotionally draining.
Whether it’s a difficult colleague, family member or friend, constantly engaging with a toxic person can leave you exhausted and anxious.

The first step is recognising patterns. Do they thrive on drama? Ignore boundaries? Twist conversations to make you feel guilty? Once you identify the behaviour, you can decide whether every issue truly deserves your time and energy.
Ask yourself: Is this worth the emotional cost?
One of the healthiest things you can do is pause before reacting. Not every comment needs a comeback, and not every disagreement requires a full-blown confrontation. Ask yourself whether engaging will improve the situation or simply create more stress.
Sometimes, choosing peace over proving a point is the smarter option. This doesn’t mean you are weak or avoiding the issue — it means you are protecting your mental wellbeing.
Set boundaries and stick to them
Toxic individuals often test limits. Clear boundaries help you maintain control over your emotional space. This could mean limiting phone calls, avoiding certain topics or reducing time spent together.

Be firm but respectful. You don’t need to over-explain your decisions. A simple “I’m not comfortable discussing that” or “I need some space right now” is enough.
Focus on what you can control
You cannot change another person’s behaviour, but you can control your response to it. Instead of trying to win every argument, focus on staying calm, grounded and emotionally aware.
Surround yourself with supportive people, prioritise self-care and know when to walk away. In many cases, protecting your peace is the most powerful battle you can choose to win.
