Dr Van Niekerk, a specialist at MediClinic, says specialists look for two main signs when checking for autism. First, they assess communication skills, including how the child expresses themselves, understands others, and interacts socially. The second is looking for repetitive behaviours, habits, or a strong preference for routine and sameness. Signs of autism will often appear in early childhood, although they can vary from one child to another.
