Does your feet sweat a lot? Here is why

We all know that sweaty feet often lead to smelly feet and nobody likes that. You would assume that your feet will only sweat when they are warm and you have been wearing closed shoes for a long time, however, it is also possible that they sweat and produce a foul odour even when they are cold.

What’s causing this, you may ask, several health publications detail some of the contributing factors.

The Morden Foot and Ankle publication mentions that the reason for this is that our feet have a high density of sweat glands, particularly eccrine glands. “These glands can become overactive, leading to a condition known as plantar hyperhidrosis.”

Furthermore, it is stated that anxiety can activate these glands, increasing perspiration and intensifying the feeling of chilled feet from sweat evaporation. The mentioned source also claims that peripheral neuropathy, caused by nerve damage, disrupts normal foot function, causing abnormal sensations like excessive sweating and coldness, often resulting from conditions like diabetes.

According to the Advanced Foot and Ankle Institute of Georgia, hyperhidrosis, a condition affecting 5% of people, involves excessive sweating in the feet. It is said to contribute to an athlete’s foot, so it’s crucial to seek treatment from a specialist.

The Degree Deodorant publication adds that exercise causes sweaty feet, which can lead to bacteria causing smelly feet. Excessive sweating is normal after physical activity, but can also be caused by stress, hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, and standing up all day, explain the mentioned source. These factors are said to cause discomfort, embarrassment, and confusion for some individuals.
