This year’s edition introduces an exciting new concept, Khayelitsha Maskandi Festival and Friends, expanding the festival’s musical offering while keeping Maskandi at the heart of the event.

Sjava joins the festival as one of the headline acts

Award-winning South African artist Sjava is among the headline acts for this year’s festival. Known for blending African Trap Music, hip-hop, R&B and traditional African influences, the musician brings a sound that connects contemporary music with South Africa’s rich musical heritage.

Sjava has previously spoken about the influence of Maskandi, isicathamiya and mbaqanga on his sound, making him a natural addition to a festival celebrating these musical traditions.

His inclusion reflects the festival’s aim to bring different audiences and generations together through music, creating a space where traditional and contemporary sounds can share the same stage.

Siphokazi Zanazo, spokesperson for the Khayelitsha Maskandi Festival, said:

“The ‘and Friends’ concept is about growing the festival without losing what makes it special. Maskandi is at the heart of who we are, but South African music has always evolved through different sounds, influences and generations coming together. We want to celebrate those connections and give our audience an even bigger experience this summer.”

Organisers have indicated that more entertainment and festival experiences are expected to be announced, building anticipation for the November event.

Celebrating Maskandi, culture and community

Since its inception, the Khayelitsha Maskandi Festival has grown into what organisers describe as the Western Cape’s biggest dedicated Maskandi festival. The event has developed beyond a music gathering into a cultural platform, celebrating South African identity and bringing together established performers, emerging artists and fans from across the province.

Its continued growth reflects the enduring popularity of Maskandi and the demand for major cultural events that celebrate local music and heritage.

Supporting local businesses this summer

The festival also forms part of Cape Town’s build-up to the summer and festive season, offering music lovers an opportunity to reconnect with the sounds and traditions they love.

Beyond entertainment, the event creates opportunities for food vendors, traders and other local businesses to reach festival-goers and participate in the festivities.

With Sjava joining a strong line-up of Maskandi favourites, the Khayelitsha Maskandi Festival and Friends promises an expanded musical experience while keeping its cultural roots firmly in place.
