Why young South Africans are choosing Chinese cars

The South African automotive market is undergoing a noticeable shift as younger buyers increasingly choose Chinese car brands over traditional European and other manufacturers.

Once viewed as budget alternatives with questionable quality, Chinese vehicles have transformed into modern, feature-rich, and competitively priced options that appeal to a new generation of motorists.

According to EWN, “Young South Africans are navigating the economic realities we are faced with, as those realities are different from older generations, but their ambitions remain remarkably similar.”

The publication also reports the latest study by Standard Bank’s Youth Barometer, which found the financial behaviour of young adults between the ages of 18 and 34. It revealed that the country’s youth still aspire to financial independence, homeownership, career success, and long-term security.

These are just some of the common reasons why the youth of South Africa are choosing Chinese cars:

  • Value for money
  • Stylish designs
  • The affordable prices of their SUVs
  • Improved quality and safety
  • The electric and hybrid advantage that the Chinese cars have
  • The technological appeal of the cars

Tshiamo Molanda, Head of Personal Banking South Africa at Standard Bank, says, “When it comes to new vehicle purchases, the Barometer reveals the growing popularity of Chinese brands also among the under-35s.

“This reflects a shift towards value-driven purchasing decisions, with competitive pricing, strong specifications and extended warranty offerings making new car ownership more accessible to youth who may previously have relied on the used vehicle market, the survey finds.”

Molanda continued, “Traditionally popular brands like Volkswagen and Toyota still retain a dominant position. For a long time, the VW Polo remained the number one car, and it’s still very popular, especially among the young people between the ages of 18 and 25.”

But as Chinese manufacturers continue investing in quality, dealer support, and innovative technologies, they are likely to play an increasingly important role in South Africa’s automotive landscape.
