England ends Mexico’s World Cup dream in five-goal thriller 

England are through to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding on for a desperate 3-2 victory over tournament co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca last night. 

A quickfire brace from Jude Bellingham, plus a Harry Kane strike from the spot, offset Jarell Quansah’s 54th-minute red card in what was an absolute humdinger of a game.

Playing in front of a passionate home crowd, Mexico fought bravely and twice found the back of the net, raising hopes of a memorable victory.  

However, England’s clinical finishing and composure in key moments proved decisive, ending the hosts’ dream of lifting the trophy on home soil. 

Fans fuel Mexico, but it was not enough

Mexico’s campaign was filled with determination and exciting performances. The team showed resilience throughout the tournament, earning the admiration of fans with their attacking football and never-give-up attitude.  

Despite the heartbreaking exit, the players leave the tournament with their heads held high after representing their nation with pride.

As one of the host nations, Mexico’s exit marks the end of an emotional journey that united millions of Mexican fans. Although their World Cup adventure has come to an end, the unforgettable atmosphere created by Mexican fans and the team’s spirited performances will remain one of the lasting memories of the tournament. 

On to the quarterfinals

With the knockout stage heating up, the race for the FIFA World Cup title continues, promising more thrilling encounters and unforgettable moments as the world’s best teams battle for football’s biggest prize. 

England’s next match will be a quarterfinal clash with Norway.
