Recognising the signs of autism early can make a significant difference in a child’s development and overall quality of life.
While every child grows and learns at their own pace, identifying autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as early as possible allows families to access the support, therapies, and resources that can help children reach their full potential.
An early diagnosis is not about placing labels on a child—it is about understanding their unique needs and ensuring they receive the right care at the right time.
What is autism?
According to Mediclinic, autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world around them.
Since autism is a spectrum, every autistic person is different, as some may need substantial daily support, while others live independently and require minimal assistance.
The warning signs of autism
Dr Van Niekerk, a specialist at MediClinic, says specialists look for two main signs when checking for autism. First, they assess communication skills, including how the child expresses themselves, understands others, and interacts socially. The second is looking for repetitive behaviours, habits, or a strong preference for routine and sameness. Signs of autism will often appear in early childhood, although they can vary from one child to another.

When should parents seek advice?
Parents should speak to their child’s doctor or a developmental specialist if they notice ongoing developmental differences or have concerns about communication, behaviour, or social interaction. Developmental screening during routine health visits can help identify children who may benefit from further evaluation.
