Bright, naturally sweet and endlessly versatile, the humble sweet potato deserves a permanent spot in your kitchen. Whether roasted until caramelised, whipped into a silky mash or folded into baked treats, this vibrant root vegetable is as nourishing as it is delicious.

Here’s why sweet potatoes are worth adding to your weekly shop – and a few easy ways to enjoy them.

What exactly is a sweet potato?

Sweet potatoes grow underground as tubers, much like regular potatoes, but they’re actually from a completely different plant family. Their deep orange flesh (though some varieties are pale or purple) hints at their rich nutritional profile – and their naturally sweet flavour makes them equally at home in savoury dishes and desserts.

Why sweet potatoes are so good for you

Beyond their comforting taste and colour, sweet potatoes are packed with nutrients that support overall wellbeing.

A boost of antioxidants

Sweet potatoes are rich in antioxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin A and vitamin E. These compounds help protect cells from damage while supporting the immune system and reducing inflammation.

Happy, healthy eyes

The same orange pigments that give sweet potatoes their colour also support eye health. Nutrients like vitamin A, lutein and beta-carotene help protect vision and keep eyes functioning well over time.

Gentle on digestion

Sweet potatoes contain both soluble and insoluble fibre, which makes them a digestive ally. Fibre supports regular digestion, helps maintain gut health and keeps you feeling satisfied after meals.

A heart-friendly choice

The fibre and antioxidants found in sweet potatoes also contribute to heart health. They can help support balanced cholesterol levels while reducing inflammation in the body.

How to choose good sweet potatoes

Look for sweet potatoes that feel firm and heavy for their size. The skin should be smooth with no soft spots, bruises or signs of sprouting. Smaller to medium-sized ones are often sweeter and cook more evenly.

Delicious ways to enjoy sweet potatoes

One of the best things about sweet potatoes is how easily they fit into everyday cooking. Their natural sweetness pairs beautifully with both bold savoury flavours and warming spices.

Roast them: Toss chunky wedges with olive oil, salt and pepper, then roast until golden and caramelised. Add rosemary or smoked paprika for extra flavour.

Mash them: Boiled or roasted sweet potatoes make a silky mash. Add butter, a splash of cream or even a hint of cinnamon for something a little different.

Blend into soups: Sweet potatoes bring natural creaminess to soups. Blend roasted pieces with stock, garlic and warming spices for a comforting bowl.

Bake with them
Mashed sweet potato works beautifully in baked goods. Stir it into loaf cakes, muffins or pancakes for added moisture and subtle sweetness.

Turn them into fries: Cut into thin strips, season well and roast until crisp on the edges. They make an easy side for burgers, grilled chicken or salads.

Flavours that love sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes pair particularly well with:

  • Warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and paprika
  • Earthy herbs such as rosemary, sage and thyme
  • Crunchy nuts like pecans or walnuts
  • Creamy toppings like yoghurt, feta or tahini

Comforting, colourful and packed with goodness, sweet potatoes prove that everyday ingredients can still feel a little special. Whether served roasted alongside dinner or baked into something sweet, this kitchen staple always delivers.
