The hidden damage caused by taking pills daily

Pill consumption has become so common. From supplements to prescription meds, it’s easy to pop a tablet without thinking twice.

As beneficial as pills are in healing the body, they can also cause damage when taken frequently.

This is confusing, right? Pills are known to help, not cause harm. However, according Better Health Channel, different types of pills can affect your body in different ways and the effects associated with pills can vary from person to person.

How you are affected depends on body size, general health, the amount and strength of the pill, etc.

Pills can cause a range of effects from mild side-effects to serious long-term damage to organs such as the kidneys, liver and heart.  They may also lead to dependence and addiction.

Discovery cites that all pills can have a negative effect on kidney health, whether they are prescribed or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, or the chronic consumption of illegal drugs or alcohol. Even some medicines given to people in hospital can cause kidney disease.

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines commonly used to treat headaches and pain.
  • Diuretics, also known as a water tablets, used to remove excess water and salt from the body.
  • Certain prescribed antibiotics to treat bacterial infections can increase risk of kidney disease.
  • Traditional medicines including those used in enemas have also been associated with kidney disease
  • Herbal supplements
  • Chronic intake of alcohol and illegal drugs such as heroin, cocaine and ecstasy
