Challenges and solutions of single parenting

For some, depending on the situation, single parenting can be a plus, but it can also come with its challenges. Luckily, there are solutions for what most would find to be a trying time.

Below are four challenges of single parenting along with a few tips and solutions by the publication Marriage.

1. Overbearing financial responsibilities

This may be one of the most frustrating challenges for single parents. As a couple, partners agree on the financial roles each person should take. However, as a single parent, financial responsibilities are not the same.

Solution: Sit down with your kids and explain to them that you need to cut back on certain things so that you do not strain too much on trying to maintain a certain lifestyle.

2. Loneliness

It is not easy dealing with the loss of a partner. You may feel emotionally drained by your partner’s absence.

Solution: Replace all negative thoughts with positive thinking and redirect your energy to more productive activities. This allows you to give yourself room to find yourself – a great benefit for the kids.

3. Low self-esteem

Society tends to judge single parents instead of supporting them. This judgement can lead the parent to have low self-esteem.

Solution: Engage in confidence-building activities and surround yourself with people who will bring positivity to your life.

4. Guilt

It is quite common for single parents to feel a sense of guilt. For example, with divorce, one partner may ask themselves the following questions, resulting in guilt:

  • How will the children judge me when they grow old?
  • What if I could have been patient with my spouse?

Solution: Avoid self-blaming as it is unhealthy. Instead, accept the situation and be confident that you made the right decision.
