Thulani Chauke shares his passion for dancing

by Bridgette Matjuda

Dancer and choreographer Thulani Chauke chats to us about his love for dancing and his upcoming performance at the 2018 Dance Umbrella Festival. By Fundiswa Nkwanyana

I share my life’s story through my dance moves. I love that dancing allows me to be myself. Through dancing, I have the freedom to express my emotions, and also get to travel the world.

I’m excited to showcase my dance piece, titled Nothing Makes Sense.
My performance will highlight our right to live and be seen as human beings regardless of race, gender, culture and class. I hope that I will connect with my audiences, and that they will walk away with a new way of thinking.

Win 1 of 10 double tickets to a Dance Umbrella show!

Working with other artists has helped me to overcome financial challenges. Funding remains a huge challenge for people in the industry. Over the years, I have realised that collaborating with local and international artists to create work together helps us overcome this challenge.

Being patient continues to be my winning formula. As a dancer, mastering the dance moves takes a long time. You need to be patient in order to perfect them. This is not easy. But, practising patience and humbling myself to the journey ahead helped me to become the prominent dancer I am today.

Catch Thulani Chauke at the 2018 Dance Umbrella Festival which will take place from 6 to 18 March at various locations around Johannesburg.
