Teething is a significant milestone in your baby’s early development, marking the arrival of their first teeth. While it’s exciting, it can also be a challenging time for both babies and parents.

Understanding what to expect and how to manage this phase can make the journey smoother and more comfortable for your little one.

Understanding the teething process

Teething usually begins around six months of age, but can vary widely from baby to baby. It involves baby teeth pushing through the gums, which can cause discomfort. Common signs include increased drooling, gum swelling, irritability, and a tendency to chew on objects. Recognising these signs early helps you provide timely comfort and care.

Comforting your baby during teething

There are several safe and effective ways to ease your baby’s teething discomfort:

  • Teething toys: Chilled (not frozen) teething rings can soothe sore gums.
  • Gentle gum massage: Using a clean finger, gently rub your baby’s gums to relieve pressure.
  • Pain relief: Consult your paediatrician about appropriate pain relievers if necessary.
  • Distraction and comfort: Extra cuddling and attention can help calm your baby.

When to seek medical advice

While teething is usually a normal process, watch for signs that might indicate something more serious, such as high fever, prolonged crying, or refusal to eat. If you notice anything unusual or if symptoms seem severe, it’s important to consult your paediatrician to rule out infections or other health concerns.

Looking ahead: Teething and beyond

Teething is just one step in your baby’s growth, leading to their first smile full of teeth. By staying informed and responsive, you can help your baby navigate this stage with less discomfort and more joy, laying the foundation for healthy oral care habits in the years to come.
