Building self-control takes time, consistency, and willingness to make small changes every day. By learning how to manage impulses and stay focused on your goals, you can develop healthier habits and make better decisions in your everyday life.

The health and wellness hub Psychology Today explains that self-control isn’t about self-deprivation but is rather about redefining what you enjoy to keep destructive behaviours in check. It also concerns taking charge of your actions and learning to resist immediate temptations, no matter how strong they may feel.

By practising self-control, especially during challenging moments, you show both yourself and others that you are willing to take responsibility for your choices and personal growth, the information portal shares.

How to build self-control

Below are a few ways to master self-control and achieve your goals.

Mend personal relationships

Change habits that hurt you and the people standing in your corner. With introspection, taking responsibility for yourself, and improving the destructive aspects of your lifestyle, you may just solve past problems with family and friends.

Reduce stress

Self-control means developing good coping skills so that you can healthily handle stress. For example, you can practise flexibility to adjust plans when things don’t go as planned, face fears, and have an advanced plan for handling stressful situations.

Eat a balanced diet

Eating balanced and nutritious meals has been associated with improved mental well-being and better physical health.

Take out a pen and start journaling

Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help sort them out, retrace your steps, and better understand what drives your thinking and behaviour.

Forgive mistakes

Take time to forgive yourself and others to release the hold that negativity has on you. The more you learn to forgive, the less likely you are to hold onto anger, making it easier to stay in control of your emotions.
