The winter temperatures have dipped, and scarves are out of storage, so that means it’s time to switch on the gas heater or think about how to use gas safely.

Unsafe heaters may cause house fires or emit dangerous fumes that may cause further harm. When such happens, the colourless and odourless gas fumes are difficult to notice until it’s too late. Although gas heaters are good to have, it is always vital to know how to use them safely to avoid risk.

According to ESKOM, these are some of the few ways you can safely utilise your gas heater;

  1. If you can, let a professional inspect your gas heater at least once a year. This helps detect any leaks or cracks that could release carbon-monoxide into your home or cause a fire.
  2. Consider getting a carbon-monoxide alarm to help detect fumes released.
  3. Supervise children around gas heaters.
  4. Always check that the bullnose of the gas heater is located at the end of the cylinder before attaching the regulator to the cylinder valve. Check that it is not brittle, cracked, or perished.
  5. Always make sure your portable gas heater hoses or power cords are not extended through a doorway into other rooms, as the door could accidentally be closed and it could cause a leak in the hose.

It’s important to keep warm while taking the necessary precautions.
