Some people look forward to the winter season with its refreshing cold air, offering a sense of comfort and relaxation to stay in and get cosy.
However, this is also a time when there is an increase in respiratory viruses causing illness across the country. This is why it is important to take steps to protect yourself and others in the months ahead.

Viruses and other pathogens thrive around this time, increasing the risk of flu, especially for children.
So, what are the common illnesses during winter? How can we protect ourselves?
Given the factors of autumn and winter, it is crucial to prioritise health and understand what the common illnesses are and how you can protect yourself.
According to Discovery Med, these are some of the few winter illnesses to look out for:
- Bronchitis: When you have the common cold, you are at a major risk of developing bronchitis. The common signs include inflammation of the bronchial tubes and mucus accumulation.
- Influenza (Flu): One of the more common illnesses during the colder months, influenza usually occurs all year-round. But during the winter season, the emergence can be severe.
- Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19): Everyone knows how highly transmissible COVID-19 is. Although it is similar to influenza or RSV, it is extremely dangerous, with symptoms that could be milder and sometimes cause hospitalisation.
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Respiratory Syncytial Virus can cause symptoms similar to common colds in healthy adults and children. Similar to bronchitis, RSV can lead to severe inflammation of the bronchi and lungs, which can be potentially life-threatening for anyone.
- Sinusitis: Seasonal allergies can lead to sinus infections, especially for people living with sinusitis. Catching a cold may cause an acute sinusitis. While sinusitis is not contagious, acute sinusitis often accompanies colds, which can spread the cold virus to others.

Preventative measures are always there, and everyone should take precautions to try to curb the illnesses. Some cold and flu viruses are contagious, and it’s always difficult to contain viruses that travel through the air. But with these preventative measures, you can try to curb the situation.
- Always wash your hands, trying by all means not to touch your nose, eyes or mouth unnecessarily
- Avoid close contact with sick people
- Keep your mouth covered every time you cough or sneeze
- Another preventative measure readily available is getting the flu shot
- Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading any flu or colds
