Time out: BON Hotel Riviera on Vaal

by Bongiwe Tshiqi

Who doesn’t love a getaway? Even a short one just outside your city can do wonders for the soul. Our digital editor recently took such a trip and spent one night at the BON Hotel Riviera on Vaal and this is what she thought.

Location

The BON Hotel Riviera on Vaal can be found about 45minutes drive out of Joburg so it was really easy for my best friend and I to pack up an overnight bag one Saturday and mission there. The drive is very straightforward the hotel itself is located in the small town of the Vaal, right by the river.

The appearance

The hotel is well kept with clean rooms and well maintained grounds but what will really take your breath away is the view from the back of the hotel. Some of the rooms and the restaurants overlook the Vaal River and it’s quite a marvellous site. We really enjoyed winding down there upon our arrival.

The staff

The staff at the hotel and at the restaurant are incredibly friendly and helpful. There was always someone at hand to offer assistance as well as managers constantly checking up on how your meals were going.

Wining and Dining

The food was not extraordinary but it was enjoyable. The buffet dinner consists of all the basics – rice, chicken, veggies and although it wasn’t exciting or surprising it was definitely not disappointing either. If you’re staying for a few nights I would suggest that you look at nearby restaurants that you can also visit for a bit of a change.

Entertainment

There is quite a lot to keep you and the family busy at the hotel. There are a number of activities (chess, soccer, picnic and water sports) available on the premise as well a spa so that you can de-stress. We were treated to a lovely boat cruise on the Vaal River at sunset that I’d definitely recommend to other visitors.

Overall I think this is a wonderful hotel and a great way to take a break from your busy life for an affordable price. Visit their website here to find out more and enjoy!
