Join the iThemba Walkathon, and show your support for breast cancer awareness

by Kwanele Mathebula
iThemba Walkathon

This breast cancer awareness month, join Avon Justine and thousands of other women at the iThemba Walkathon.

Nearly 1 in 4 women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. This statistic makes it even more important to take steps towards lowering your risk.

Your lifestyle could lower your risk of getting breast cancer

The good news is that living a healthier lifestyle can lower your risk of getting breast cancer. For example, being overweight, inactive, consuming alcohol, eating a poor diet, smoking and exposure to chemicals could increase your risk. Women with a family history of breast cancer are also at risk. Making a point of eating healthy and getting regular exercise are some of the easy steps that you can start taking today to minimise your risk.

Warning signs of breast cancer to look out for:

  • Puckering of the skin of the breast.
  • Swelling in the armpit.
  • Swollen glands at the armpit.
  • One breast is unusually larger.
  • One breast is unusually lower than the other.
  • Dimpling of the nipple or nipple retraction.
  • Nipple discharge.

See your doctor or go to your nearest clinic if you are worried about your breast health.

You should also do a self-examination every month to make sure that you don’t have any lumps in your breasts.

Show your support for breast cancer awareness one step at a time.

What better way to get exercise and show your support for breast cancer awareness than by taking part in the iThemba Walkathon!

Avon Justine will host the 14th annual iThemba Walkathon for breast cancer awareness on 20 October 2019 at Marks Park Sports Club, Emmarentia.

Participate by pre-registering here, the iThemba Walkathon Facebook Page or participating Sportsman Warehouse stores. Entrance is only R175 per adult and R115 per child between 2 and 12 years old. You can choose whether you want to walk 5km or 8km.
