Myths VS Facts About Menstruation

To be a woman is a privilege, not a curse. “When young girls don’t have the right information about periods, they can lose confidence and even miss school when they are menstruating,” says health professional Burgie Ireland. Kotex shares some of the myths and facts commonly asked by young girls.

False: Menstruating women should not bath as this will make you bleed more or cause period pain.

Truth: Period pain is normal and usually caused by a hormone called prostaglandin.

Truth: Bathing is perfectly fine when on your period. When a woman looks good, she feels good.

False: Periods are dirty and menstruating women are ‘unclean’.

False: Heavy periods mean that a woman is fertile, while light periods mean that a woman will have difficulty getting pregnant.

Truth: As long as a woman is menstruating, it means that she is ovulating and is fertile, irrespective of her flow. Problems such as infrequent and painful periods that interfere with daily living should be investigated.

False: If you use a tampon, it will break your virginity.

Truth: Tampons are safe and only sexual intercourse breaks virginity.
