Hydration matters: The key to better health and wellness

Water is essential for life. Every cell, tissue, and organ in the human body depends on water to function properly. Staying hydrated is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain good health, improve physical performance, and support mental well-being. According to Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health, being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood.

Despite its importance, many people do not drink enough water each day, which can lead to dehydration and various health problems.

What is hydration and why it matters

Hydration is the process of providing your body with enough water to carry out its normal functions. Since the human body is made up of about 60% water, maintaining the right fluid balance is crucial for overall health.

Water is lost throughout the day through sweating, breathing, and urination, making it important to replenish these fluids regularly.

Water plays a vital role in nearly every function of the body. It helps regulate body temperature, transports nutrients, removes waste products, lubricates joints, and supports healthy digestion. Proper hydration also keeps your skin healthy and helps your organs function efficiently.

Benefits of staying hydrated

  • Can boost physical performance
  • Waters your brain function
  • Contributes to a healthy digestive system
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Maintains healthy skin
  • Supports kidney health

How much water should one drink?

There is no single amount of water that is right for everyone, as fluid needs vary depending on age, body size, activity level, climate, and overall health. According to Harvard Health, most people need about 4 to 6 cups of water per day.

A practical approach is to drink water regularly throughout the day, increase your intake during exercise or hot weather, and pay attention to your thirst and the colour of your urine, which should generally be light yellow.

Always remember that every glass of water is an investment in your health, helping your body perform at its best every day.
