Gail Mabalane speaks on Pimville pause

In a heartfelt social media post, the Pimville star expressed her sadness over the show’s sudden disappearance from television screens and the impact it has had on the cast, crew, and countless professionals who depended on the production for their livelihoods.

“Woke up today thinking of Pimville… Imagine being at work one day, making TV, and then, the next day, seeing a post like this on social media,” she penned.

The message went on to express the disappointment felt by many who worked on the SABC2 drama series.

“This beautiful story deserved to be told… it should still be on air. To our beloved viewers, thank you. Honestly, as creatives and as an industry, we deserve better than this.”

A sudden end to a promising story

The emotional reflection comes weeks after the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced it had paused the broadcast of Pimville due to unresolved contractual obligations and payment-related disputes involving production company Bakwena Productions.

The broadcaster removed the telenovela from its schedule and replaced its 9pm timeslot with repeat episodes of Amalanga Awafani Season 2.

The controversy surrounding Pimville first surfaced when reports emerged that cast and crew members had allegedly gone unpaid for months, leading to a halt in production. The sudden pause not only affected audiences invested in the storyline but also disrupted the livelihoods of numerous individuals working behind the scenes.

Payment disputes and conflicting claims

The SABC has maintained that it fulfilled its contractual obligations to the production company and alleged that Bakwena Productions was in breach of its agreement with the broadcaster.

Bakwena Productions, however, disputed the broadcaster’s claims, arguing that the production difficulties stemmed from alleged contractual breaches and payment defaults by the SABC itself. The disagreement has since escalated into a legal and contractual dispute, leaving the future of the series uncertain.

As the dispute continues, cast and crew members remain caught in the middle, facing financial uncertainty as they wait for a resolution.

A show that resonated with viewers

Despite the ongoing challenges, many fans and industry insiders continue to mourn the loss of a series that had quickly established itself as a compelling addition to South African television.

Featuring a star-studded cast including Gail Mabalane, Thapelo Mokoena, Michelle Mosalakae, and Jesse Suntele, Pimville earned praise for its powerful storytelling, authentic performances, and its portrayal of South African life.

For viewers, the show’s disappearance from screens has left a noticeable gap, with many hoping that the story may one day return.

A broader industry concern

Beyond the disappointment of losing a beloved television show, the Pimville saga has highlighted a larger issue within South Africa’s entertainment industry: the financial vulnerability faced by actors, writers, producers, crew members and countless other professionals whose livelihoods depend on productions continuing uninterrupted.

The emotional social media post has resonated with many precisely because it speaks to a shared frustration within the creative sector — the reality that careers and incomes can be disrupted overnight.

For many, the story of Pimville is no longer just about a television show. It is about the people behind the cameras and on screen who dedicate their lives to telling South African stories, only to find themselves facing uncertainty with little warning.

As the post poignantly concluded: “As creatives and as an industry, we deserve better than this.”
