Here’s why you need to read Becoming by Michelle Obama

by Fundiswa Nkwanyana
Becoming Michelle Obama

I always try and distance myself from anything that has to do with politics. But, when Michelle became the first African American to be the first lady and reside in the White House, I was eager to know more about her. The media attention that she received fuelled my fascination even more, and when her book, Becoming Michelle Obama was released, I quickly dived in. By Fundiswa Nkwanyana

As I read the last page of this very thick hardcover, I was happy that all the questions I had about her were answered, and I got more than I bargained for. I gained insight into the life experiences that shaped her perspective on race, marriage, motherhood and politics.  There were some chapters that broke my heart, made me laugh, want to fall in love and inspired me to follow my intuition; which I sometimes doubt.

The book starts off with her childhood and takes us through her life right until when she and her family left the White House. Without giving away much, I also enjoyed reading about her relationship with Barack Obama, the former US President, and raising their daughters. The only challenge I found while reading this book was when she was talking about American politics. I’m not familiar with politics, but I continued to read because she was candidly honest about what happens behind closed doors, and she did not hide the horrible side of politics which I found fascinating.

I love that this book opened up my mind and changed my perspectives on many social issues that I took for granted. Most importantly, I was amused by the fact that I had a lot in common with Michelle and that her struggles are similar to those that young black women are facing.
