Catching Up With Nigeria’s Davido

by Boitumelo Mmakou

The countdown to the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) has begun! At the age of 22, Davido Adeleke is a well-accomplished hip hop artist, with a BET award for Best International Act, 2014 MAMA winner for Best Male and Artist of the Year and many other awards under his name. This year, the MAMAs have once again nominated him for Best Male and Best Collaboration. He tells us about his music and more.

What influences your music?

God, because all things come from Him; my fans, my day to day personal experience and my environment.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard of it?

My music can simply be described as the new sound of Afro hip hop, with the infusion of Afrobeat; my sound is a little bit of everything.

You are one of Africa’s most featured artists, how has this impacted on your career?

Been the most featured artist has impacted my career massively, both in Africa and the world at large. Capture2'

Which three artists would you still like to work with?

They are so many, but the three now will be Belgium artist Stromae, Cassper Nyovest and the Souti Soul.

What makes Davido deserving of the Best Male Artist award at the MAMAs?

I produce quality music and videos. My hard work speaks for itself.

Many other African artists want to be as successful as you are. What is the key to your success?

Firstly, you have to be hard-working; secondly, never look down on upcoming artists because most the biggest songs I have now is with them. Thirdly, do not be penny-pinching on your own work or career – always go for the best when it comes to music. Lastly, invest the money you’ve made back into your career. Capture

Being only 22 and so greatly admired by your fans, how do you deal with the pressures?

I don’t let it get into my head. Money is not new to me; I make music for the people; my fans are a blessing. I am humbled by the love my fans give me and I can only return the favour by loving them as much.

Last year you won most of the awards at the MAMAS, what was that like for you?

That feeling is indescribable, but it was the best feeling ever. I’m thankful to God and my fans.

How do your fans vote for you?

I try to motivate them and campaign with my team and management. I’m very involved with my fans on social media and everywhere I go.

What is next for Davido in the last few months of 2015?

I am currently working on my sophomore album, which will come out in August. I’m excited; I can’t wait for my fans to hear it. I will launch my album in five countries, starting on 25 September. The launch will begin in London followed by Paris, South Africa, New York and Lagos.
