How to choose the right foundation for your skin type

It’s important to choose the right foundation for your skin type. We give you tips on all all the right tricks to get a perfect canvas

By Grace Mantjiu

Choosing a foundation that’s right for your skin type is essential. If you have oily skin, you need to use matifying formulas and if you have dry skin go for more hydrating types.

Here are a few foundation types and the type of coverage you get:

Liquid foundation– This type gives medium to full coverage, depending on how much you apply it. Suitable for most skin types.

Cream foundation– Provides full coverage and is best suited for dry skin.

Mousse– Tends to be lightweight and is suitable for all skin types.

Stick foundations– Best for normal to oily skin. The coverage can be heavy making it easier to cover blemishes or pigmentation.

Face powder– Power is easy to apply and build up coverage. This type is suitable for oily skin

Tips from the beauty editor

  • If you want natural looking coverage use a makeup sponge. They help blend the foundation evenly in one step.
  • When testing the right shade, make swatches on your cheeks from three different shades. The right shade will disappear into your skin, making it look like you are not wearing any makeup at all.
  • Wear a primer under your foundation to create a smooth base and make it last longer.
