Award-winning South African producer and DJ Sun-EL Musician has found himself at the centre of a growing controversy. Some social media users in Zambia have called for the cancellation of his upcoming performance in the country amid ongoing tensions linked to anti-immigration protests in South Africa.

Briefly News reported that the backlash emerged shortly after promotional material for Sun-EL Musician’s scheduled Zambian appearance began circulating online. Several users took to social media platforms to express their dissatisfaction, arguing that South African artists should face consequences for what they perceive as growing anti-foreigner sentiment and violence in South Africa.
Xenophobia fallout continues to affect South African artists
The criticism directed at Sun-EL Musician, real name Sanele Sithole, comes amid broader concerns that South African entertainers are increasingly facing professional repercussions across the African continent due to ongoing anti-illegal immigration protests and allegations of xenophobic violence back home.
Earlier this month, South African Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi acknowledged that several artists had reported losing international bookings and performance opportunities as tensions surrounding immigration issues escalated. According to reports, some performers have seen multiple African tour dates cancelled in recent weeks.
An international promotions company, Y2K Entertainment Promotions, also announced that it would suspend support for South African artists in solidarity with communities affected by the unrest, highlighting the growing international impact on the country’s entertainment industry.

Social media divided over calls for cancellation
While some Zambian social media users have called for Sun-EL Musician’s performance to be cancelled, others have defended the musician, arguing that artists should not be held accountable for broader political and social issues beyond their control.
Supporters have pointed out that music has historically served as a bridge between African nations and cultures, cautioning against allowing political tensions to damage artistic and cultural exchange across the continent.
The debate has also reignited conversations about the role public figures should play during periods of social and political unrest and whether entertainers should be expected to publicly address national controversies.

No official cancellation confirmed
At the time of publication, neither Sun-EL Musician nor the event organisers had announced any cancellation or postponement of the scheduled performance. The acclaimed producer, who recently headlined the sold-out Red Bull Symphonic alongside Dlala Thukzin, has not publicly commented on the growing backlash.
As discussions continue online, the controversy surrounding Sun-EL Musician’s Zambian appearance has become the latest example of how social and political tensions can have far-reaching consequences for artists working across Africa’s entertainment landscape.
