Gayton McKenzie promises to entertain music lovers with 12 hip hop concerts a year

by Sergio Miller

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie plans to ensure that lovers of the hip hop music genre are kept entertained as he reveals plans to ensure that more events are held in the country throughout the year.

According to news and entertainment publication Citizen News the minister recently did a walkabout at the Hip Hop Museum where he was accompanied by Osmic Menoe founder of the Back to The City (BTC) festival.

The festival is one that takes place annually and will return to Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown Johannesburg on the 12th of October.

While in attendance Gayton highlighted the need to have much more hip hop festivals and events in the country.

He mentioned that he plans to change the fact that the hip hop community is often overlooked.

“I’m going to make a promise right here, from our department. I do believe that we should have 12 concerts a year,” said Gayton.

“There’s going to be 12 concerts, and we will pay for those concerts.”

Meanwhile, the minister mentioned that these sacrifices will come at a cost for those who are part of hip hop, saying that his department will only go the extra mile if they start fighting for themselves and their genre.

“While we fight for you, you should fight for yourself. I don’t want to fight for people who don’t want to fight for themselves.”

“We want to see how many people are working and how much they are getting paid. We don’t want to fund exploitation.”

He mentioned that before the cabinet experiences a reshuffle, he would want to feel content knowing that he has had an impact on the art of Hip Hop.
