A podcast discussion about relationship expectations has sparked debate online after Dr Musa Mthombeni and his wife, Liesl Laurie-Mthombeni, were held up as an example of what a loving relationship should look like.

The conversation took place on Loud Wednesdays with Yolanda, where a guest referenced the couple’s public displays of affection, romantic getaways and the way they celebrate their marriage as an example of relationship goals.

Dr Musa and former Miss South Africa Liesl have been married since 2021 and regularly share glimpses of their relationship with their followers.

Dr Musa and Liesl become the benchmark

The couple have built a reputation on social media for openly celebrating one another.

From birthday tributes and anniversary posts to holiday pictures and affectionate messages, their online presence has often given followers a glimpse into their marriage.

During the podcast discussion, this public display of love was presented as something other couples could aspire to.

The comparison, however, did not sit well with everyone.

Men push back against relationship expectations

Some men online argued that using one high-profile couple as a benchmark could create unrealistic expectations for relationships.

Critics questioned whether men should be expected to replicate the lifestyle, romantic gestures and public displays associated with Dr Musa simply because the couple shares them online.

Others pointed out that every relationship operates differently, with couples having different financial circumstances, personalities and ways of expressing affection.

For some, love may be expressed through gifts and holidays, while others may demonstrate commitment through emotional support, quality time or helping their partner through difficult periods.

Social media does not show the full picture

The debate also highlighted the influence of social media on modern relationships.

While couples may share their happiest moments online, those posts rarely provide a complete picture of what happens privately.

A romantic holiday photograph, an anniversary tribute, or an expensive gift can show one aspect of a relationship without revealing the everyday challenges, disagreements and compromises that also form part of a long-term partnership.

This has led some social media users to caution against comparing their own relationships to carefully selected moments shared by public figures.
