A day out with friends turned into a nightmare for Clement Hadebe, a 29-year-old man from Madadeni, Newcastle, KwaZulu Natal, after he was brutally murdered in a Johannesburg bed and breakfast. Clement who was part of the gay community was found shot nine times after spending the night with a man he had met.

According to ZiMOJA, Clement and his friends were at a popular spot in KwaMai Mai when they encountered a group of three men who offered to buy them drinks. The close friend who spoke to the publication, one of the men began showing interest in Clement.

“I advised him to tell the guy that he was gay,” the friend shared. “I could tell that the guy was straight, but Clement just played along. When he asked Clement to go home with him, I again called him to the side and begged him to reveal his sexuality, but he brushed me off.”

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing violence faced by the LGBTQ+ community in South Africa. Back in 2022, Human Rights Watch addressed a letter to South African authorities expressing concern over the alarming number of murders and assaults targeting LGBTQ+ individuals.

The organisation urged authorities to ensure that such crimes are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted, stating that the ongoing violence against LGBTQ+ individuals remains a critical human rights issue in South Africa. The letter highlighted several cases from 2021, where LGBTQ+ individuals were brutally murdered.
