Why Johannesburg families should take their kids on safari

Between school, sport, birthday parties and increasingly busy family schedules, finding an activity that is genuinely enjoyable for both children and parents can be a challenge.

A safari may not be the first thing that comes to mind when planning a family day out in Johannesburg. Still, it offers something few other experiences can: entertainment, education and time in nature in one outing.

Located in the Cradle of Humankind region, approximately 13km from Lanseria Airport, the Lion & Safari Park offers families the opportunity to experience wildlife through safari drives, guided activities and encounters designed to bring visitors closer to the natural world.

For parents, it is a chance to introduce children to South Africa’s wildlife in an environment that makes learning feel like an adventure rather than a lesson.

When the classroom comes to life

Children learn through experience, and wildlife provides an almost endless source of questions like: How does a lion hunt? Why does a giraffe have such a long neck? What makes a cheetah different from other predators? Why do animals behave differently in groups? Seeing animals in person can turn those questions into an opportunity to learn about behaviour, habitats, food chains and biodiversity.

The Lion & Safari Park also offers educational opportunities for schoolchildren, including exposure to wildlife and research initiatives, helping to connect the visitor experience with a broader understanding of conservation and the natural environment.

A safari that works for the whole family

One of the advantages of a family safari is that the experience does not have to look the same for everyone.

Parents may be interested in the wildlife, photography or the opportunity to spend time outdoors, while younger visitors can enjoy the excitement of seeing animals up close and taking part in activities designed specifically with families in mind.

The Lion & Safari Park offers a range of experiences, including guided and self-drive safari options, bush walks, quad experiences and horseback safaris, alongside family facilities such as a children’s play area and dining options.

The result is an outing that can be shaped around the ages and interests of the family rather than a one-size-fits-all itinerary.

Giving children a connection with nature

There is another reason to put safari on the family calendar: connection. For children growing up in an increasingly digital world, opportunities to spend meaningful time outdoors are important. A wildlife experience encourages them to put down their devices, observe their surroundings and engage with something they cannot control or predict.

There is no rewind button when an animal appears. No algorithm deciding what happens next.

It is simply an opportunity to watch, listen and experience.

Those moments can become lasting memories, while also helping children develop an appreciation for the natural environment and the wildlife that forms such an important part of South Africa’s heritage.

You don’t need to wait for the next school holiday

One of the biggest misconceptions about safari is that it requires a long-distance trip and several days away. For families in Johannesburg, a wildlife experience can be much closer to home.

The Lion & Safari Park’s location makes it possible to turn a weekend or school-holiday outing into a genuine safari experience without committing to a lengthy trip – and perhaps that is the biggest reason to put it on the family calendar.

A safari is not simply another activity to keep children entertained for a few hours. Done well, it can spark curiosity, create shared memories and introduce young people to the natural world in a way that no screen can replicate.

Sometimes, the best family day out is the one that gives everyone something to talk about on the drive home.
