Tips on how to create space in your wardrobe

Is your wardrobe just too small for all your clothes? A cluttered wardrobe can be a daily frustration, making it difficult to find what you need and causing unnecessary stress.

However, with a few smart strategies and some organisation know-how, you can transform your closet into a streamlined space where everything has its place. Here are 8 practical tips to maximise the space in your wardrobe:

1. Declutter regularly

The first step to maximising your wardrobe space is to declutter regularly. Go through your clothes, shoes, and accessories and be honest with yourself about what you actually wear and what you can let go of.

Donate or sell items that no longer fit or that you haven’t worn in the past year. By reducing the number of items in your wardrobe, you’ll instantly create more space for the things you love and actually use.

2. Upgrade your hangers

Replace bulky hangers with slimline ones to save space and create a more uniform look in your closet. Slimline hangers take up less space horizontally, allowing you to fit more clothes onto your hanging rails. They also prevent clothes from slipping off and getting tangled, keeping your wardrobe neat and organised.

3. Use vertical space

Make use of the vertical space in your wardrobe by installing additional shelves or stackable organisers. Use shelf dividers to create sections for different items such as sweaters, jeans, or accessories. You can also install hooks or pegs on the inside of doors or walls to hang bags, belts, or scarves, freeing up shelf and drawer space for other items.

4. Invest in wardrobe organisers

Consider investing in closet organisers such as hanging organisers, drawer dividers, or modular storage systems. These organisers can help maximise every inch of space in your wardrobe by providing designated storage for shoes, folded clothes, jewellery, and other accessories. Look for customisable systems that can be adjusted to fit your specific needs and space constraints.

5. Fold strategically

For items that don’t need to be hung, such as t-shirts, sweaters, and jeans, master the art of strategic folding. Fold clothes neatly and store them vertically in drawers or on shelves to maximise visibility and accessibility. This not only saves space but also makes it easier to find and retrieve items without disrupting the entire contents of your wardrobe.

6. Rotate seasonal items

Maximise space in your wardrobe by storing seasonal items that you don’t currently need. Use vacuum-sealed bags or storage boxes to pack away out-of-season clothes, coats, and bulky sweaters. Store these items on the top shelf or in the back of your closet to keep them out of the way until you need them again.

7. Organise by category

Organise your wardrobe by category (e.g., tops, bottoms, dresses) and then by colour or type within each category. This not only makes it easier to find specific items but also helps you make the most of your space by grouping similar items together. Use labels or clear storage bins to further organise smaller items such as socks, underwear, or accessories.

8. Make use of under-utilised spaces

Don’t overlook under-utilised spaces such as the area under hanging clothes or the back of closet doors. Use storage bins, baskets, or shoe racks to take advantage of these spaces and store items that would otherwise clutter shelves or drawers.
