The world’s leading safari destination
For three years in a row, the World Travel Awards have recognised Kenya as the World’s Leading Safari Destination.
Kenya is the proud home of the world-famous Maasai Mara where you can see the Big 5. It is also the place where you can spot the popular wildebeest migration which takes place from July through to October. During this time, more than two million animals migrate from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the greener pastures of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. As such, if you’re searching for the safari experience of a lifetime, Kenya has it in store.
A multilingual nation
There are more than 60 languages spoken in Kenya. However, English and Swahili are Kenya’s official languages. Around 16% of the country’s population is able to fluently speak English, while Swahili is spoken as a second language by around 70% of Kenyans.
A place which the Maasai people call home
Kenya’s Maasai Mara is home to the Maasai people. They are a population of approximately half a million and are known for being great warriors. They are also famous for their incredible jumping skills, as well as their dress code which includes the red shuka cloth.
Plenty of beach bliss
Kenya boasts approximately 536km of coastline. Although the country is mostly known for its wildlife experiences, it also has a truly incredible coastline with beautiful white sand and inviting waters. Some beaches which are worth the visit include Watamu and Diani Beach.
Home to the first African female Nobel Peace Prize winner
Wangari Maathai was the first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. The renowned Kenyan socialist, environmentalist and political activist was recognised for her contribution towards peace, democracy and sustainable development. Since then, a number of other women in the country (and on the continent at large) have won Nobel Peace Prizes.
