How to know when your nanny is not coming back

It can be stressful when your nanny doesn’t show up to work one day, or starts acting differently without an explanation. Whether your nanny has been with you for years or just a short  while, if you suspect they’re not planning to come back, it’s important to know the signs and how to handle the situation.

Here are signs to look out for suggested by Childcare Bureau-division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. They are responsible for promoting the health and development of young children, including through quality childcare and early education:

  • When the nanny has been increasingly absent from work.

  • Given that the nanny is not responding to calls or texts in a timely manner.

  • The nanny has not been meeting the family’s needs or following their instructions.

  • If the nanny seems unhappy or disengaged when at work.

  • If your nanny is frequently late or does not show up for work without notice.

The above-mentioned source also adds that it is always wise to have open communication with your nanny, “open communication is key to maintaining a positive relationship with your nanny. You should be clear about your expectations for the role and provide regular feedback on the nanny’s performance.”

‘You should also be open to hearing any concerns or feedback from the nanny, and be willing to make changes if needed. Communication should be respectful and professional on both sides. Without open communication, it can be difficult to maintain a healthy relationship with your nanny,”  added Childcare Bureau.
