Where was the Bafana that qualified?

by Staff Bona
Bafana Bafana announces 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

Sixteen years after South Africa and Mexico shared the spotlight in the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the two nations met again to kick off another global spectacle. The atmosphere was electric. The stadium was packed. The occasion felt enormous.

Unfortunately for Bafana Bafana, the performance never matched the moment.

From the first whistle, South Africa looked overwhelmed, like a deer in headlights, stuck in the mud and unable to get moving. Mexico pressed high, controlled possession and dictated the tempo, while Bafana struggled to string together any meaningful passages of play. Every attempt to play out from the back invited pressure, and Mexico simply kept turning the screw. The hesitation was constant, and it was punished.

Former England captain John Terry, speaking as a pundit on SuperSport after the match, summed it up by questioning where the South African side that qualified for the World Cup had gone.

This was not the composed, organised unit that had navigated qualification. Instead, Bafana looked caught between ideas, hesitant in possession and uncertain under pressure. They tried to play out from the back but lacked the calm to execute it.

And without Ronwen Williams’ early save, the game could already have been out of sight by halftime.

The 2-0 scoreline ultimately flattered South Africa.

Mexico struck the woodwork, created the clearer chances, and on another day could have won by a far greater margin. Bafana, meanwhile, never truly got going. No rhythm, no sustained threat, no sense of control. They did not so much play as they endured. And that is the most frustrating part of all, because losing is one thing, but losing without laying a glove on the opposition is something else entirely.

Things unravelled further after the break when discipline collapsed. Two red cards reduced Bafana to nine men and turned a difficult evening into a comprehensive defeat.

For all the frustration, context matters. Mexico were at home, roared on by a partisan crowd, and widely seen as Group A favourites. One defeat does not define a campaign.

But the concern runs deeper than the result. South Africa did not resemble the team that earned its place at this tournament.

That version of Bafana must return quickly, because the next challenge leaves no room for error.

Not all is lost, but this is a reality check in the clearest sense. After the defeat to Mexico, South Africa head into two decisive Group A fixtures against Czechia on 18 June 2026 and South Korea on 25 June 2026 knowing the equation is simple: respond immediately or go home. The ask is simple for this team: play, get stuck into the game, and if it ends in a losing cause, so be it, but play.
