10 years on: Remembering Wayde van Niekerk’s historic Rio 400m world record

Ten years ago today, South African athletics witnessed one of its greatest sporting moments. On 14 August 2016, Wayde van Niekerk produced a performance for the history books at the Rio Olympic Games, winning the men’s 400m final in a stunning 43.03 seconds to claim Olympic gold and smash Michael Johnson’s long-standing world record.

A decade later, the run remains one of the most remarkable performances ever seen over one lap of the track.

A record that stood for 17 years

Before Rio, the men’s 400m world record belonged to American sprint legend Michael Johnson. 

Johnson had run 43.18 seconds in Seville, Spain, in 1999, and the mark had survived for 17 years. Van Niekerk lowered it by 0.15 seconds in one extraordinary race. 

What made the achievement even more remarkable was the manner in which he did it. 

Van Niekerk was drawn in lane eight, the outside lane of the Olympic final. Rather than being able to gauge the position of his rivals around the first bend, he had to run much of the race without seeing the athletes closest to him. It did not matter.  He exploded from the blocks and maintained an astonishing pace all the way to the finish.

 

The race that stunned the world

Van Niekerk crossed the line in 43.03, with Grenada’s Kirani James taking silver in 43.76 and American LaShawn Merritt claiming bronze in 43.85. 

The race was so fast that three athletes broke 44 seconds in the same Olympic final, something that had never happened before. 

Johnson, watching the race as a commentator, was visibly stunned by what he had witnessed. His record had finally fallen, and it had been broken by a South African running from the outside lane. 

The performance immediately became one of the defining moments of the Rio Games.

A golden moment for South Africa

Van Niekerk’s victory also delivered South Africa its first gold medal of the Rio Olympics. 

At just 24 years old, the Cape Town-born athlete had already established himself as a world-class 400m runner. He had won the world title in Beijing in 2015, but Rio elevated him to another level. 

His victory also completed a remarkable progression. Earlier in 2016, Van Niekerk became the first athlete to run under 10 seconds for 100m, under 20 seconds for 200m and under 44 seconds for 400m. 

That versatility demonstrated just how extraordinary his speed was across the sprint distances. 

The record remains

World Athletics continues to list Van Niekerk’s 43.03 as the men’s outdoor 400m world record. The mark also remains an Olympic record. 

It has therefore stood not simply as a South African record or a memorable Olympic performance, but as the benchmark for the world’s best 400m runners.
