The wait for Africa’s biggest women’s football tournament just got a little longer.
The Confédération Africaine de Football has officially postponed the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026, shifting the tournament from its original March slot to later in the year. The competition, which will be hosted by Morocco, will now take place from 25 July to 16 August 2026.
The decision follows consultations between CAF, FIFA and several key stakeholders involved in organising the tournament.

Why The Tournament Was Moved
CAF confirmed that the adjustment was made after discussions with partners and organisers, citing unforeseen circumstances that required the schedule to be reconsidered.
The tournament had initially been scheduled for 17 March to 3 April 2026, but officials felt moving the dates would give organisers more time to ensure the competition runs smoothly.
CAF said preparations for the event are continuing and that organisers remain confident the tournament will deliver a successful showcase for women’s football on the continent.

Morocco Remains The Host
Morocco was awarded the hosting rights for WAFCON 2026 in October 2024, marking another major football event for the North African nation.
In recent years, Morocco has rapidly positioned itself as one of Africa’s most prominent football hosts, staging tournaments across men’s and women’s competitions while investing heavily in stadium infrastructure and football development.
The new dates mean the tournament will now take place during the African summer, a period that may also align better with international calendars and broadcasting schedules.

What It Means For Teams Like Banyana Banyana
For defending champions Banyana Banyana, the postponement could offer additional preparation time as teams across the continent continue building towards the next edition of the tournament.
The South African women’s national team captured continental attention after winning their first WAFCON title in 2022, and expectations remain high for the team heading into the next competition.
Many fans in South Africa took to social media after the announcement, with some welcoming the change.
Some supporters said the new timing could help avoid clashes with domestic league commitments and allow players more time to recover and prepare. Others simply expressed excitement that the tournament is still on track to go ahead.
Women’s football continues to grow across Africa, and WAFCON remains the continent’s biggest stage for the game.

A Bigger Stage For Women’s Football In Africa
CAF insists the date change is about strengthening the tournament rather than delaying progress.
With preparations already underway and Morocco set to host, organisers believe the revised timeline will help deliver a stronger event that reflects the rapid rise of women’s football across the continent.
When the tournament finally kicks off in July 2026, it will once again bring together Africa’s best teams in a competition that continues to capture the imagination of fans from Johannesburg to Casablanca.
