Arsenal extend lead as Chelsea fall and City stumble in Premier League

by nikita.m

The Premier League title race took another twist this weekend as Arsenal tightened their grip at the top of the table, Newcastle pulled off a statement win at Stamford Bridge, and Manchester City stumbled again in a damaging draw against West Ham.

With the season entering its decisive stretch, every point now carries serious weight. Arsenal’s late surge at the Emirates, combined with City’s slip-up in London, could prove pivotal in shaping how the title race unfolds.

Arsenal supporters were made to wait until the closing moments before celebrating a crucial win over Everton at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners eventually broke through in the 89th minute when Viktor Gyokeres capitalised on a mistake from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. A dangerous cross caused confusion in the box, allowing Gyokeres to tap home and give Arsenal the breakthrough they had been chasing.

Everton pushed everyone forward in the dying moments in search of an equaliser, even sending Pickford upfield for a late corner. The gamble backfired spectacularly.

In stoppage time, 16 year old Max Dowman raced clear after collecting the ball in midfield, gliding past two defenders before calmly finishing into an empty net.

The goal sealed a 2-0 victory and etched Dowman’s name into Premier League history. At just 16 years and 70 days, he became the youngest scorer ever in the competition, breaking the long standing record held by James Vaughan.

The win pushed Arsenal 10 points clear at the top of the table with seven matches remaining, although second placed Manchester City still have games in hand.

Newcastle claim another major scalp against Chelsea

Newcastle United continued their impressive run by claiming a hard fought 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Anthony Gordon scored the decisive goal early in the match, finishing from close range in the 18th minute after Joe Willock timed his run perfectly to meet a pass from Tino Livramento.

Chelsea actually began the match on the front foot and created several promising chances. Wesley Fofana headed wide, while Alejandro Garnacho, Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez all threatened before Newcastle struck.

The hosts increased the pressure after halftime. Substitute Liam Delap tested goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, and Garnacho saw an effort blocked by Sven Botman as Chelsea searched for a breakthrough.

Their best chance arrived deep into stoppage time when captain Reece James curled a free kick against the post, but the equaliser never came.

The result leaves Chelsea sitting fifth in the Premier League standings, while Newcastle climbed to ninth after securing back to back wins against Manchester United and Chelsea.

Manchester City stumble as title pressure grows

Earlier in the day, Manchester City saw their title challenge suffer a major setback after being held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham at the London Stadium.

Bernardo Silva gave City the lead in the first half when a misjudged cross drifted beyond goalkeeper Mads Hermansen and into the net.

The advantage lasted only a few minutes. West Ham responded quickly when Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home from close range after City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to deal with a Jarrod Bowen corner.

City dominated possession for long periods but struggled to create clear chances. Erling Haaland endured another quiet afternoon as the champions looked increasingly frustrated.

Despite late pressure and opportunities for Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku, City were unable to restore their lead.

The draw leaves Pep Guardiola’s side nine points behind Arsenal, raising serious doubts about their chances of retaining the Premier League crown this season.

Other results from the weekend

Elsewhere, Burnley and Bournemouth played out a goalless draw, while Brighton secured a narrow 1-0 win away at Sunderland.

With just weeks left in the campaign, the Premier League table is beginning to take shape. Arsenal’s late drama may yet prove decisive, while City now face an uphill battle if they hope to close the gap before the season reaches its final chapter.
