Themba Zwane’s ban extended
The sanction, imposed for a breach under Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code covering misconduct of players and officials, means Zwane will now miss Bafana Bafana’s remaining two group matches against the Czech Republic and South Korea, rather than returning for the final fixture as initially expected.
Zwane was dismissed in the 85th minute of the 2-0 defeat at the Estadio Azteca, with VAR intervening to show a hand on the face of Mexico’s Alvarado. The decision had already proven costly for South Africa, who finished the match with nine men after Sphephelo Sithole was also sent off earlier in the contest.

The upgraded suspension is a significant blow for head coach Hugo Broos, who loses an experienced attacking option for both remaining group games. South Africa, already facing an uphill battle after their opening defeat, must now find a way forward without one of their most creative players.
The decision is subject to appeal, and the South African Football Association is expected to review their options in the coming days.
