South Africa’s Blitzboks produced a gritty performance in New York on Sunday to defeat Fiji 10-7 and lift the HSBC SVNS tournament trophy, a result that also secured the 2026 series crown.
The final was a tense, physical battle between two of the sport’s most respected sevens sides. South Africa struck first and built a valuable lead before holding firm during a late surge from Fiji to close out the victory.
The win marked the Blitzboks’ fourth tournament triumph of the season after earlier titles in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver.

Early breakthrough gives South Africa momentum
The opening moments of the final set the tone for a match defined by pressure defence and quick transitions.
Impi Visser sparked the first big moment when he ripped the ball free in a tackle. The turnover created immediate attacking space and slick passing released Gino Cupido, who sprinted over the tryline after just two minutes.
Fiji pushed hard to respond but struggled to penetrate South Africa’s disciplined defensive line before halftime, leaving the Blitzboks ahead at the break.

Leyds doubles the advantage
The contest remained tight in the second half until another defensive mistake from Fiji proved costly.
When the islanders lost possession in a tackle close to their own tryline, Tristan Leyds reacted fastest to gather the ball and score. The try extended South Africa’s advantage to 10-0 with five minutes remaining.
Against a team known for dramatic comebacks, however, the match was far from finished.
Fiji fight back in tense finish
Fiji’s resilience soon showed when Terio Veilawa crossed the line and converted the try to cut the deficit to just three points.
The closing stages delivered a dramatic final sequence. Fiji launched one last attack with the tryline in sight, but a crucial knock-on ended the move and handed possession back to the Blitzboks.
From the scrum that followed, Fiji conceded a penalty and South Africa calmly kicked the ball into touch to seal the title.
Strong semi-final performance sets up title clash
Earlier in the day the Blitzboks booked their place in the final with a determined 14-5 victory over Argentina.
Sebastiaan Jobb opened the scoring in the second minute after a quick turnover created space for the attack. Argentina pressed for an equaliser but South Africa’s defence held firm.
Selvyn Davids then produced one of the standout moments of the match with a stunning 70-metre run that stretched the lead to 14-0 before halftime.
Argentina managed a second-half try through Marcos Moneta, but the Blitzboks closed out the match under heavy pressure to secure their place in the final.
