Bafana Bafana returned to football’s ultimate global stage at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament marked the national team’s first appearance at the global showpiece in 16 years.

Stripping away 2010’s host status, South Africa hadn’t actually qualified for a World Cup in 24 years. Needless to say, it was a first for every player taking the field. The nerves clearly got to them, and a clinical Mexico side punished Bafana to hand them a frustrating opening loss.
A few big names simply didn’t turn up on the day. But they didn’t just throw in the towel. The boys dug deep, got their heads right, and completely turned things around in their final two group games.
First, they ground out a tough draw against Czechia. Then came the big one – an unforgettable win over South Korea. Out of nowhere, a historic spot in the Round of 32 was in the bag.
The run eventually came to an end against Canada. It was a heartbreakingly close game, but it takes nothing away from what the boys achieved.

For the first time, Bafana Bafana actually made it out of a World Cup group. Today, we take a look at who really stood up when it mattered.
Top 5 Bafana Bafana World Cup players
5 – Tapelo Maseko: While we lacked sharpness and energy in attack, Maseko was the exception. His directness and ability to run at defenders were a great outlet for Bafana Bafana. And who can forget his goal, right? The goal that sealed South Africa’s Round of 32 position.
4 – Ime Okon: Steady and reliable at the back. After the tough opening match against Mexico, Okon came into central defence and settled down quickly. His ability to remain composed under pressure on the global stage was highly impressive.
3 – Khuliso Mudau: One of the top wing-backs on the continent, and he showed exactly why. Bursting up and down the right flank, Mudau will be remembered for more than chewing Chappies; his performances proved he’s right up there with the very best.
2 – Ronwen Williams: A calm head when things got difficult. After the shaky start against Mexico, Williams helped settle the nerves at the back. He made a total of 12 saves in four matches.
1 – Mbekezile Mbokazi: The most consistent performer for Bafana. Mbokazi looked a class above his peers and opponents. Never flustered, never under pressure. It always looked like he was one step ahead. He’s definitely one for the future.
This tournament was about breaking new ground. By making history and reaching the knockouts, the boys have set a completely new standard for the future of Bafana Bafana.
