Celebs give back this Mandela Day

by Kwanele Mathebula
Mandela Day

The 18th of July 2018 marked the 100th birthday of former statesman Nelson Mandela. It is also the annual 67 Minutes for Mandela Day initiative where South Africans are urged to make an impact in their communities by giving back. Some of our fave celebs took part in this initiative in their own communities and shared images on social media.

Here’s a look at what they got up to!

Very humbled that this @shoutsa project is still going strong after 11 years. Today we launched another library at Fumisukoma Primary School in Motherwell,Port Elizabeth. #makeeverydayaMadibaday

Kicked of this morning at the Skills Development Centre in Diepsloot with the young and and a centenarian uGogo Makhura. Happy 100th birthday Gogo. ??? “100 Minutes of Coding for Madiba with SAP’ is resonant with President Obama’s speech when he said “….when we think how we’re going to employ more people, here is going to be also technology, because artificial intelligence is here and it is accelerating, and your’re going to have driverless cars, and you going to have more and more automated services and that’s going to make the job of giving everybody work that is meaningful tougher….” The future of our children lies in us giving them technological advantage to be equipped with the fast changing world. Very well done @kolekalwana and your team for a job well done! #DoGoodCircle #100MinutesOfCoding4Mandela #SAP4Good #ActionAgainstPoverty @gautengdcs #SiyafundaCTC

My afternoon stop was at Jabulani Khakibos boys home in Berea, and their motto is “Positively impacting the lives of children living and working in the streets.”. The boys age from 8-18yrs and over the last 3 months two boys graduated from Boston College. Their methodology is to intrinsically develop and build the man within, from teaching them when they come back from school how to work with money, budget, life skills and making the right choices for their young lives. At Connect Channel we knitted 100 blankets over the last two months and today it was our blessing to be able to bless and keep the boys warm. We gave the boys haircuts, played soccer and had a meal together. #ConnectCares #ConnectTV #ConnectChannel #BeTheLegacy #Madiba100

Spent my 67mins with the young ones. ⏰ I think the whole point of #MandelaDay is to remind us that EVERY DAY should be #MandelaDay. Thank You to @daytona_za @basetsanakumalo & the @akafoundation for letting me spend some time sharing my experiences and some inspiration with the kids at @jabulanikk. I told them, the most important lesson i learnt in life is to find something that you are insanely passionate about ? … I also shared a couple shibobo’s ? I hope you all did your part today, but also that it inspired you to do more on a more regular basis. ❤️ ? by @nolocation__ ??
