A play on French plaits

by Kwanele Mathebula
French plait

2 simple ways to add flair and flavour to your usual French plait.

1. Side swept

The side swept French plait is a chic way to style your hair. This look can be switched up with accessories to take it from casual to elegant. It’s always best to moisturize the hair before plaiting to help soften it and nourish the scalp. Follow these easy steps to achieve this hairstyle:

  1. (Optional) Blow-dry your hair to give it extra length. Remember to apply heat protective products before, to prevent damaging it.

2.Brush all hair to the back to neaten and detangle it.

3. Using a thin tail comb, part the hair from the side and comb it down on either side of the line. Make sure the line starts from the hairline and ends just behind the ear.

4. Plait the hair from the front section ending at the back of the head in line with the neck. (Optional) If you have short hair, add hair extensions for volume and length.

5. Braid the excess hair into a ponytail and tie it with an elastic band. Repeat the plaiting on the other side and also braid the excess hair into a ponytail. Tuck and pin the tail ends under the plaits on opposite ends of the head or let them hang.

2. Boho Crown

The boho crown, worn by Mary J Blige many times, is an elegant French plait. The look is sophisticated, romantic and gives a soft finish to any look. You can add volume by braiding a ponytail, then coiling it into a bun. Get the look by following these easy steps:

Moisturise your hair and blow-dry it to add length. Remember to protect it with a heat protector serum. Comb the hair back and tie it into a ponytail.
