President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially extended the deadline for the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, chaired by Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, allowing it additional time to complete its investigation into allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
The extension follows a request from the commission, which cited the large number of witnesses and outstanding evidence still to be heard before it can conclude its work.

According to the Presidency, the commission will now continue its hearings beyond the original deadline to ensure that all relevant testimony is considered before a final report is submitted.

The commission
Spokesperson to the President Vincent Magwenya explained that the extension granted by Ramaphosa sets an evidence deadline of October 2, and a reporting deadline of November 16, to enable the commission to close off topics it has opened up in the course of hearings to date.
Magwenya said, “That without this additional time, large parts of the crucial investigation would remain unfinished. The extension ensures that the commission can adequately hear evidence on every matter listed in its official terms of reference.”

President Ramaphosa also said, “The extension is intended to give the commission sufficient time to complete its work thoroughly rather than rush its findings.
The Presidency also noted that the inquiry has already referred several matters for immediate criminal investigation and urgent prosecutorial decisions through its interim reports.
He also reiterated its commitment to allowing the commission to complete its mandate independently and comprehensively, saying the additional time will help ensure that its final report is based on a full assessment of all available evidence.
