President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the timeframe for the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, chaired by Mbuyiseli Madlanga, to complete its work and submit its final report.

The inquiry was established following allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July 2025 relating to criminality, political interference and corruption within the criminal justice system.

According to the Presidency, the commission will now submit a second interim report by 29 May 2026 and its final report by 31 August 2026.

The extension was granted at the request of the commission due to the number of individuals who still need to appear before it.

“Accordingly, the Commission shall submit a second interim report by 29 May 2026 and a final report on the completion of the inquiry, on 31 August 2026,” the Presidency said in a statement.

Cyril appointed the inquiry on 21 July 2025 in terms of section 84(2)(f) of the Constitution. Justice Madlanga serves as chairperson, while Sesi Baloyi and Sandile Khumalo were appointed as commissioners.

The commission submitted its first interim report to the president on 17 December 2025 and resumed its hearings in January this year.

In that report, the commission referred several matters for immediate criminal investigation and urgent prosecution decisions, and also made recommendations regarding the employment status and possible suspension of certain individuals.
