This robust action reflects the agency’s intensified efforts to protect the integrity of the social grant system, which serves millions of vulnerable South Africans dependent on social assistance.
Chief Executive Officer Themba Matlou stated that these dismissals signify SASSA’s unwavering commitment to accountability.
“We are sending a clear message to every official that no one is above the law, no one is beyond accountability, and no one will be allowed to abuse their position at the expense of vulnerable beneficiaries,” he declared.
Since the inception of its Anti-Fraud Strategy, SASSA has seen significant progress. Out of the 134 cases received since April, 106 have been concluded, leading to the dismissal of 65 officials for various transgressions.

The other outcomes included written warnings, final warnings, and suspensions without pay, with a few resignations occurring during the process.
Matlou noted that sixteen of these cases were withdrawn, while four officials were found not guilty, emphasising the agency’s adherence to fair and just disciplinary procedures.
The breakdown of dismissals reveals a concerning trend regarding provincial misconduct. The Eastern Cape has the highest number of dismissals at 19, followed by Mpumalanga and Gauteng with 13 each, and KwaZulu-Natal with 11.
Matlou urged consistent vigilance across all regions, suggesting that the agency must continually strengthen its internal controls and oversight mechanisms.
Moreover, Matlou expressed grave concerns about death threats received by staff members managing these sensitive cases of alleged wrongdoing.
He condemned all attempts to intimidate or threaten officials, reinforcing that SASSA will support those who act within the law and serve the public interest.
“The fight against fraud requires sustained commitment and professional courage,” Matlou asserted, urging cooperation across the agency in facing intimidation or resistance while upholding the social welfare mandate.
As SASSA ramps up its control measures, Matlou reassures the public that the agency is committed to better detecting, investigating, and resolving instances of fraud.
These recent actions on the part of SASSA underscore the seriousness with which the agency approaches its responsibilities, paving the way for a more transparent and accountable social assistance system.
