Winter cold giving you troubles? A good quality duvet could be your saviour

by Sergio Miller

With the icy winter fully settled in, warmth and comfort should be our number one priority, especially during nighttime.

As is the case with every South African winter, June, July and August are often considered to be three of the coldest months of the year. We experience constant rain, cloudy days, occasional thunder, as well as potential snowfall due to a drop in temperature.

While we may not be able to control these external elements, one positive thing that we can do, aside from ensuring that we have the proper nutrients to build our immunity, is to ensure that we are adequately covered. This goes beyond merely wearing a jacket when leaving your home, but also ensuring that you are warm and protected while in your living space.

One way of doing so is by investing in a good-quality duvet.

A duvet is essentially a warm, fluffy blanket made of a soft bag that gets filled with feathers, wool, or other synthetic fibres to provide you with warmth and comfort. This is often best used with a duvet cover, which enhances its physical appearance.

However, it is of utmost importance that you invest in the right duvet, as each comes with its own purpose.

Here is how to distinguish them:

Ball Fibre: According to Beds & Pillows, Ball Fibre Filling offers a premium stuffing solution ideal for a variety of home textile applications.

“This high-quality filling is crafted from regenerated fibres, ensuring durability and resilience while maintaining softness and comfort.”

Hollow Fibre: “Hollowfibre duvets are lightweight, breathable, and excellent for trapping heat, making them ideal for allergy sufferers and those looking for easy-care bedding,” highlighted Cuddle Down.

Down Duvets: This is best known for its light and fluffy undercoating. “Down clusters have a round centre known as plumule from which thousands of tiny fibres radiate – a little like the head of a dandelion. The round shape traps air allowing for exceptional warmth and weightlessness. Down duvets boast superior insulation, making them ideal for chilly climes and those who prefer lighter-than-air covers,” explains Feather & Black.

Each of the three boasts excellent insulation properties, and is guarenteed to keep warm air trapped to provide you with comfort and rest.
