Why you should never use a bath towel on your face

It’s one of those automatic habits most of us never question – wash your face, reach for a towel, and give it a good rub.

However, if you’re struggling with breakouts, irritation, or dull skin, this everyday ritual might be working against your skincare goals.

Let’s dive into why it’s not a great idea to wipe your face with a towel after washing, and what you should do instead.

The problem with towels

Towels harbour bacteria

Towels, especially if reused or not dried properly, can be a breeding ground for bacteria, mildew, and dead skin cells.

Even a “clean-looking” towel might be filled with microscopic grime that gets transferred to your freshly washed skin, leading to breakouts or irritation.

Rough texture = Micro-tears

Most bathroom towels aren’t exactly gentle. Rubbing your face with a rough towel can cause tiny micro-tears in the skin, weakening your skin barrier over time.

This is especially damaging for those with sensitive, acne-prone, or dry skin.

Cross-contamination happens easily

If you’re using the same towel for your hands, hair, or body — or worse, sharing it with someone else — you’re introducing all kinds of bacteria and oils to your face.

Even washing towels with fabric softener can leave behind residue that’s not face-friendly.

Towels strip away moisture too quickly

Wiping away every last drop of water might seem like a clean finish, but it actually prevents your skin from holding onto hydration. Your skin absorbs product more effectively when it’s slightly damp.

Better alternatives to dry your face

1. Let it air dry (Gently pat excess water if needed)
The simplest, most hygienic option is to let your face air dry. If you’re in a rush, you can gently blot — not rub — with a clean paper towel or tissue. This minimises bacteria transfer and friction.

2. Use a dedicated face towel (and wash it daily)
If you must use a towel, opt for a clean, ultra-soft microfibre towel that’s only for your face — and change it out daily. Microfibre is gentle and absorbent without being abrasive.

3. Try a muslin cloth or bamboo facial cloth
These soft, reusable cloths are gentle on the skin and can be washed after every use. They’re especially great for those who double-cleanse or use oil-based cleansers.

Pro tip: Keep skin damp for better absorption

Damp skin is more receptive to serums and moisturisers. Instead of waiting until your face is completely dry, apply your next skincare step while your skin is still slightly moist. This helps seal in hydration and boosts the effectiveness of your products.

Something as small as swapping your towel-drying habit can make a big difference in your skin’s health. Your face deserves better than a potentially dirty, rough towel — so let it breathe, stay damp, and treat it with care. Little changes like this can lead to a calmer, glowier complexion over time.
