Every generation is criticised by the one before it. Older generations have called younger people entitled, impatient, or overly sensitive for decades. Today, those conversations often focus on Generation Z.
But is Gen Z truly struggling to handle life’s hardships, or are they facing challenges that previous generations experienced in different ways?

Can Gen Z handle hardships?
According to a study done by UNICEF, the answer is more complex than a simple yes or no. Gen Z is deeply engaged with global issues, consumes news more than any other form of content, and is eager to shape the future.
This makes them a generation growing up in uncertain times. Unlike previous generations, Gen Z has come of age during a period marked by global uncertainty. Many grew up during economic instability, experienced the disruption of a global pandemic during critical developmental years, witnessed political polarisation, and have lived with constant access to social media.
The UNICEF study continued to show that despite their resilience, creativity and determination, a worrying combination of geopolitical conflict, climate and ecological crisis, economic uncertainty and mental health challenges is leaving young people feeling overwhelmed, disempowered and adrift without adequate mental health support or services.

UNICEF Director of Private Fundraising and Partnerships Carla Haddad Mardini says, “The study provides a vital glimpse into the collective unease Gen Z are feeling at the current state of the world, and the persistent gaps in the resources they need to promote positive well-being, which is negatively impacting their sense of agency.”
A question of perspective
Perhaps the better question is not whether Gen Z is weaker, but whether the nature of hardship has changed.
Every generation faces unique obstacles. Previous generations endured wars, economic recessions, and limited opportunities. Gen Z faces digital overload, economic uncertainty, climate concerns, and constant public scrutiny through social media.
