The joys of having children later in life: What to expect

by Staff Bona

We’ve heard all the reasons why women shouldn’t have kids later in life – some valid, others ridiculous. But what about the benefits? Older parents are often more stable, more ready and more capable. Learn about the advantages of having kids later in life and why women deserve the right to choose.

The conversation around having children later in life, whether it’s in your late 30s or 40s, is often framed around risks or challenges. It’s also often judged. But waiting till later comes with a different rhythm, perspective and a set of advantages that’s not talked about enough. Many women find themselves more confident and mentally clear, which reshapes motherhood in positive ways.

A stronger sense of self

Women who become mothers later in life often have a better understanding of themselves because they’ve had the space to figure it out. Relationships, careers and personal growth all contribute to a more grounded sense of identity. This can lead to more intentional parenting, not driven by pressure from outside, but more by personal values. They trust their instincts more and have quit comparing themselves to others.

Lifestyle and financial stability

A very real benefit is greater financial security. You’ve had years of career experience behind you, and you may be more flexible in how you approach childcare, family life and schooling. This means you can be more present and enjoy raising your child instead of worrying about making ends meet.

A deeper appreciation for the moment

Waiting for motherhood is powerful. For many, this path isn’t so straightforward, so when the moment arrives, it’s more meaningful. The small moments – first smiles, bedtime routines and milestones – are often savoured more deeply. Each phase is appreciated fully instead of rushing through them.

Evolved relationships

Parenting later can improve your relationships. Emotional maturity fosters patience, resilience and better communication. If you happen to have a partner, you may be more aligned in your values and approach to raising a child.

A redefined approach to energy and well-being

One of the judgments women face is that they won’t have energy for the child. But while energy levels may feel different, many women actually approach their health more proactively later in life. There’s a greater awareness of physical and mental well-being, so you can be healthy for you and your child.

The bottom line

Having children later in life is about stepping into motherhood with intention and perspective. Remember, it’s your choice! And if you dare to refuse to be shamed for your decision, having a child later can be a beautiful advantage.
